Its probably been a couple of weeks since this record has come out. But it has all the buzz it needs to make it one of the greatest records of this year. This is also taking into consideration the Radiohead tracks that our still on mind. But the way this albums jumps up and down with all its experimentation is one to take home with you. It is an album that will leave Radiohead mean feet look still commercial. Its music for the future with many artists already bringing out covers of the songs.
Most of the tracks on this album have reached many dark spaces and alot of vulnerability is let out in the open. This an album that will leave many of fans of the genre guessing where are these people going with this album called the Third. Beth Gabbins is known for her unique voice mouthing lyrics of such pain and reminding of artists like Lou Reed and Syd Barret. Their recent concert at the Coachella became a heat that created a lot of buzz in the concert circuit.
Everything on this album is not something you can listen to once and get over it. It takes its time to grow on people. The first time i wanted to throw the record then it came to me with a beautiful track called the Rip. The Rip is by a far margin the greatest track of the year. You can even check out the rendition of the track by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. The track starts with many references to images of world catastrophes but mixes with pain of loss and longing. It also has some shades as a sister song to Weird Fishes. But all these references cannot take the originality and the feeling you get from listening to the track.
The next big track is the Machine Guns there are several cross references on this track. It is a more like a surreal take on the War on Iraq. The messages on this track are not even coherent. But it is again a feeling they create. Every song oozes with two or different beats that will linger on even after the song has left you.
Beth Gabbins takes her voice to some seriously dizzy levels. There are small variations in pitch that make the ride with her ever so indulgent. This truly a feat in music with all that it has to offer. I am not sure where the trio are headed next. I already talked about the Hercules and the love affair that breathes alot into Disco. Portishead on other hand breath and cough out blood on their tracks. Engaging is all i can say.
